Five Voices of Today

“These are very contemporary works—everyone active in the queer community will get the references. All the pieces have humor, though some are edgier than others,” O’Hara explains. “I hope that by bringing these five points of view together, this production offers a reflection of the queer community as a whole, including the issues of racism and prejudice it must face internally.”

That’s why O’Hara stresses diversity in her selections—not only of different parts of the queer community but different ethnicities. “Three of these pieces address this directly: that when you’re a person of color and queer, you’re a minority in both communities.”

These are different images than usually seen. “Often we see only the gay man who drinks too much and is suicidal, or the Lesbian who is isolated and lonely—all these stereotypes. It’s not that these things don’t exist, but they don’t reflect the experience of the majority, and I get tired of seeing those images over and over again.”
