Helen turns out to be a very ancient character. The latest scholarship says she predates the Greeks, and was a goddess in the Indo-European culture from which was the root for many ancient and modern languages. As a daughter of Zeus, Helen was a goddess of the Dawn. Her name originally was Swelena, which is related to a word meaning the heat of the sun.
