Missing Links

To the Greeks, their mythological figures were as familiar as Harry Potter, Star Trek, Star Wars, comic book heroes and celebrities are now. To us, not so much. Though you don't need an encyclopedia to enjoy the play, you might be curious to learn more about these characters. So here are the Wikipedia direct links to characters you see, or who are mentioned:

HELEN
IO
ATHENA
MENELAUS

Zeus
Hera
Paris
Odysseus

Helen turns out to be a very ancient character. The latest scholarship says she predates the Greeks, and was a goddess in the Indo-European culture from which was the root for many ancient and modern languages. As a daughter of Zeus, Helen was a goddess of the Dawn. Her name originally was Swelena, which is related to a word meaning the heat of the sun.
